Saint Petersburg – Open City May 19, 2006, New York City – The Council for Trade and Economic Cooperation (USA-CIS), and the Representative of the City of Saint Petersburg (Russia) in the U.S. welcomed journalists from the U.S. and international travel media for a luncheon discussion launching the promotion of Saint Petersburg, Russia as a premier tourist destination. The luncheon was hosted and catered by Petrossian, 182 West 58th Street, and attended by editors and writers from The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, New York Daily News, Newsweek, Forbes, Conde Nast Traveler, Bloomberg, Gourmet, Town & Country, Travel & Leisure, Travelocity, Travel Agent Magazine, Executive Travel, The Affluent Traveler, and others.
The luncheon was the first event in the United States promoting tourism in a Russian city. The government of Saint Petersburg, Russia recognizes that tourism is a catalyst for the region’s social and economic development, and is committed to enhancing the city’s tourism infrastructure and opportunities.
Saint Petersburg seeks to become one of the top five tourist destinations in Europe, joining London, Paris, Rome and Amsterdam. The city’s government, with the assistance of The Boston Consulting Group, has designed a comprehensive strategy (“Saint Petersburg – Open City”) that aims to attract five million annual visitors to Saint Petersburg by 2010.
Numerous events and projects consistent with Saint Petersburg’s strategic mission are already underway, including:
• The Stars of the White Nights Festival – over five weeks of world-class opera, ballet and classical music performances showcased by the eminent Mariinsky Theater (led by beloved Maestro Valery Gergiev) and held during a unique seasonal phenomenon;
• Grand opening of a modern building and new stage for the Mariinsky Theater;
• The New Holland Island – a unique development project that will feature cultural attractions, as well as commercial and residential spaces;
• The Seaport Passenger Terminal – expansion of the cruise ship port and construction of commercial and residential properties on the shore of the Gulf of Finland; and
• In September 2006, city officials and tourism industry representatives will host influential editors and writers from the United States in an entertaining and illuminating excursion through Saint Petersburg, new and old.
Last week’s luncheon for tourism press marked the successful beginning of an ambitious global campaign to promote tourism in Saint Petersburg, Russia’s gateway to the West.
